First Assessment Drawing
During Art 1 I did my first assessment drawings. I was asked to draw a hand, street view, tree, and an animal. During the process I had trouble making the street and puppy drawings look realistic, and I also had a difficult time drawing texture on the puppy. I think I did a decent job on the hand and tree.
Shading Techniques
During this assessment we practice cross hatching, stippling, and hatching. This is a good practice for shading.

Pen and Ink Project
For my ink and pen project I had many ideas, but the top two that i picked were staircase and candy. The staircase idea has a lot of little detail which looks really cool but it was kinda difficult to draw and add pattern to the stairs. My second choice was candy. Even though candy is easier to draw it already has its own patterns. I choose to do candy.

Sketches
For my ink and pin project I choose to do candy or sweet foods. For this project I decided to draw a few cupcakes and pops. My idea was to show value with patterns. I thought that the frosting would look really cool to show a swirl with patterns. I had difficult time picking out patterns that would go with the swirl of the cupcake, but overall it came out nice.

SELF EVALUATION
1. Describe how you arranged your composition. Discuss your use of the elements and principles. Is it a successful composition?
For one of my composition I decided to do candy. I choose a few different pictures that had many sweet foods in them. For my second composition I choose a staircase. All of the pictures I found were pictures of a staircase that would curve like a spiral as it went up to the second floor. For each picture I only cropped out a certain part of the picture and drew a quick sketch of it. I think it was a successful composition because I was able to sketch two ideas in one which turned out really nice on the final.
2. How is texture and pattern are important in your composition?
Texture and pattern are important in a composition because you can create your drawing into looking realistic. The drawing would have a visual feel to it.
3. Why is value so important in this project?
value is important because you make the picture look more 3D then just flat. With value you make your drawing look like they turn or get bigger or smaller. Value shows the places that far away when they are dark and closer objects when they are light.
4. Describe your craftsmanship (How well the project is crafted technically). My craftsmanship is pretty good. I think I took my time on most of the project and was steady with the pen. I took less time on the background which made it look a little messy. On some of the lines I wasn’t constant and went out of the line.
5. Explain how your knowledge and creating practice studies with valueand pattern contributed to the success of your piece.
I am glad that we did a lot of practice before starting our piece because it really helped you be more neat with patterns and have more knowledge on which patterns will go best with your final piece. Practice always makes the final result successful
6. When applying the pen and ink/pattern techniques why and how is it important to make sure you understand the concepts taught in class?
It is important to understand the concepts taught in class so that way you have an idea of what patterns go best with what. Also using the pattern to turn the right directions as you piece is going to show flow.
7. As a growing artist how do you think what you have learned will guide and better your future projects. Explain.
Learning how to create value and pattern will really help me in my future projects. Pattern will make my projects look more realistic and value will help me make my project pop.
8. If you could recreate your piece what would you do differently to enhance your final outcome?
If i could redo my piece I would do the background over again and actually take my time and be neat. Another thing I would do is add mor candy and not make is look empty.

Some difficulties I had was layering the masking fluid till it would peel. Another difficulty I had was adding the masking fluid to the wrong areas in my painting.
4 things I learned about this project first of all was a new way of painting with watercolor. I also learned how masking fluid is used to keep previous colors we want. Another thing is the way 3 colors can go a long way and create many different shades. The last thing I learned was letting the masking fluid air dry and not through a hair drier.
The mini watercolor lessons were beneficial because i am the type of person that doesn’t really like watercolor because it is really light and watery. Practicing using watercolor was very helpful because I learned to control it and get the hang of watercolor.
Having the guest artist was a positive experience bc you got to learn there way for painting and diffrent strategy they use.
- Explain the process you had to use to create the poured watercolor painting.
- Describe any difficulties you had with this process.

Self Evaluation
1. Describe the craftsmanship of your portrait. (Is it neat and well executed?)
I thought my portrait would not be successful because we were only allowed to use 3 colors. I am glad that I was able to get the hang of the colors really quickly. I think my portraid looked very alike to the original picture and I am proud of myself. Overall my lines and shading were smooth and neat.
2. Describe any difficulties you had blending and mixing your colors.
This project was very difficult at the beginning because I did not know how to blend color pencils. Also the colors were not blending into the actual color but after practicing I was able to create similar colors. Creating skin color was very difficult since you had to go very light on the red, yellow, and blue.
3. Did you follow directions and draw each grid box separately? Why is this important?
At the beginning of the project I was going box by box, but when it got to little details like the eyes I was starting to draw. Drawing was way faster, but going box by box made your portrait look exactly like the picture.
4. How did you create value changes with your colored pencils?
To create value I would create more layers of colors. I would first start by doing a solid color and then go back and using blue for my shading of dark areas.
5. Discuss how you were able to get the color you wanted from the 3 pencils?
Getting the colors to look exact was very difficult. What I did was play around with the 3 color pencils on a sheet of paper. I was doing this in order to have control and experiment with the colors before I actually started my final.
6. How could you improve your portrait?
A way I could improve my portrait is my getting the eyes to look the same. I had a hard time trying to make the eyes look similar but one always came out different then the other. Overall this project was fun and I enjoyed it.
7. Looking back do you feel you were prepared for this project? What part of the unit was beneficial in the success of the portrait?
I feel like I was prepared by creating a color wheel, and shading in objects. If I haven't practiced my portrait it would have turned out terrible.
8. Choose another classmate’s piece that you feel is an excellent example of mastering the techniques. Discuss why you feel this way.
I really loved Tori's piece because the colors she used was bold and it stood out. I was impressed that she when box by box which many in the class did not do. The portrait really looked like the actual picture except the the types of colors she used.
